How to Make Pidi with Chicken Curry - A Delicious Malabar Dish
Pidi is a traditional dish from the Malabar region of Kerala, India. It is made of rice dumplings cooked in a spicy coconut gravy, usually with beef or chicken. Ingredients
For the rice dumplings:
2 cups of roasted rice flour
1/4 tsp of salt
2 cups of boiling water

2 tbsp of oil
1 tsp of mustard seeds
A few curry leaves
2 onions, sliced
1 tbsp of ginger-garlic paste
2 green chilies, slit
2 tomatoes, chopped
2 tsp of coriander powder
1 tsp of red chili powder
1/4 tsp of garam masala
A pinch of fenugreek powder
1/4 cup of roasted coconut paste (made by grinding 1/2 cup of grated coconut with 1/4 cup of water)
2 cups of water or chicken stock
A few coriander leaves for garnishing
Method
To make the rice dumplings, mix the rice flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the boiling water gradually and knead to form a smooth dough. Add the grated coconut and mix well.
Pinch small portions of the dough and roll them into balls. Flatten them slightly and make a dent in the center with your thumb. Keep them covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.
To make the chicken curry, marinate the chicken pieces with turmeric powder and salt for 15 minutes.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker and splutter mustard seeds. Add curry leaves and onions and sautà until golden brown.
Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies and sautà for a few minutes.
Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
Add coriander powder, red chili powder, garam masala, fenugreek powder and salt and fry for a minute.
Add roasted coconut paste and water or chicken stock and bring to a boil.
Add the marinated chicken pieces and mix well. Close the lid and cook for 3 whistles or until the chicken is done.
Release the pressure and open the lid. Check the seasoning and adjust if needed.
Add the rice dumplings one by one to the chicken curry and simmer for 10 minutes or until they are cooked through.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with pickle or raita.
