This film is based on the book of the same name written by Nalini Jairam, based on her own life experiences as a sex worker who eventually became a monk. The movie is a major milestone for the Indian film industry as it is the first production of a South Indian film and the first Indian production with a national award of India. The film released in India on 16 July 2016 to positive critical and commercial response.[17][18][19][20]
The film stars actor Dev as the titular character Om, a young Tibetan monk who is sent to Dharamshala to study Buddhist philosophy. Om meets a sex worker called Bhadra, played by Pooja Hegde, who is imprisoned for a hit-and-run. Om is put on the track of the real culprit, who is revealed to be Shankara, played by Sonam Kapoor, who is in pursuit of the culprit. Om and Bhadra eventually escape from the pursuing Shankara and Bhadra realises that they have to find themselves as they do not remember their past. They subsequently move to Kolkata, which is where Om finds himself again. It was in Kolkata that he meets a Tibetan sex worker called Virah, played by Lena. Virah belongs to a Tibetan separatist movement who is searching for the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. As Om and Virah try to find out which one is the real incarnation of the Dalai Lama, things go awry for both of them, as they get entangled in their own destinies. The film also stars Kevin Michael Richardson and Anupam Kher in supporting roles. The film is a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual production, the film is shot in Hindi, English, and Tibetan. Om is a part of a small colony of young Tibetan monks who study Buddhism in Dharamshala, India, and has been studying in Kolkata since he was a young boy. The film was released in India on 14 October 2016.
Umformung is a story of a monk who comes from his home town and enters into the city of Kolkata to find truth. He gradually gets involved in the city life and finally finds his own answers in the mountains. He eventually reaches the place where he is enlightened.
