@toby.autodeskebay is not a very good place to buy software because there are a lot of fakes on there and they are selling the 3ds max student version when you can get it for free, so i would be aware of ebay when buying software,

If your Autodesk software was made in japan or china, the reseller will not be able to sell the product directly to you, so you will have to do it through the Japan Autodesk reseller, you can see the autodesk distributors in the internet.
@Mark.Lancaster I'm not sure how it should be treated, but the 3DS Max CE verison in particular is a huge waste of money, as is the student version of Max. The student version costs $499. It's only good for the first 90 days of use, after which you're supposed to upgrade to the full version for $799.
